Our new home is in the planning stages. We hope to construct it largely ourselves, with help from family and friends, and as little hired help as possible. Part of our motivation for homesteading is to be a little more connected to each other, to our friends and family, and to the land that supports us. So what better way to get connected with all of the above than to build a house together?
We are using straw bale construction. Not just for its insulative benefits or because it is environmentally friendly, but because it is also socially friendly. Many of the construction tasks do not require skilled labor, and bale raisings and plaster parties are fun, so it is an ideal method for the sort of construction process we want.
